In my last column, I mentioned that Yore Vision had organised the first Youth Provision Stakeholder Conference in Boroughbridge and one of the projects that was going to be key was linked around the subject of Enterprise. Each year, there is an Enterprise week in most educational establishments– it’s usually about the middle of November – where there is some real focus on developing entrepreneurial approaches to learning and skills development. Some of the key players in North Yorkshire such as NYBEP and Yorkshire Forward, together with local schools put on a packed week of activities for young people to get a flavour of what Enterprise is all about – by all accounts, there was a lot going on.

Which made the group taking Yore Vision’s project forward realise that what was crucial to make our work sustainable was that Enterprise should be for 52 weeks a year, not just the annual Enterprise week. We have been extremely well supported in our initial approaches by Harriet Dow, who is the Harrogate Area co-ordinator for NYBEP and John Collins, the newly appointed Area Manager for the North Yorkshire Youth Service- both have been invaluable in coming up with ideas and with potential sources of funding. Our current thinking is that we will aim to link our project to the emerging theme of digital and creative industries – helping young people in the Lower Ure Valley access the latest technology locally without having to go to some of the major centres of learning and technology in Leeds, York or Harrogate. We will now be inviting other interested parties to work with local young people to bid for funding to take up this opportunity. I will keep you posted on progress.

On another note, a number of people have asked how one goes about joining Yore Vision and finding out about all our activities. Funnily enough, it ties in with some work carried out by members of our marketing sub-group who have designed a new membership application form- it will be available in local outlets across the Yore vision area in the next few weeks so watch out for it. There is no subscription charge and the only criteria that matters is that you want to see our community in Boroughbridge and the Lower Ure Valley prosper and develop. We have got some tremendous projects/initiatives under consideration and we are now at an interesting juncture in our operations. We have identified those projects that will be now scoped out more fully in the form of an individual Business Plan to be presented to Yorkshire Forward for possible funding- this will take most of the next 6 months to prepare in individual groups. So there’s still some way to go yet before we can start laying any foundation stones but more and more people are sitting up and taking notice of our activities. If you want to be one of the Yore Vision team making a difference in the area, please e-mail regeneration@harrogate.gov.uk for an application form or watch in your locality over the next few weeks where hopefully, we will have application forms available.

One group, who have quietly been getting on and doing a lot of work quietly behind the scenes has been our Walks Group, led by Keith Scott, our Deputy Chair. In my next column, I’ll aim to update you on some of the possible routes that the group has been planning for people to enjoy across the Lower Ure Valley.
